Starbucks joining effort to help revitalize Red Bird Mall 

Starbucks has selected Dallas' Red Bird Mall (formerly Southwest Center Mall) for one of 15 stores it's opening in low- to medium-income neighborhoods across the U.S. It's a project that's part of what the Seattle-based coffee giant has called its social impact investments. While the stores are part of efforts to rejuvenate business districts, the locations still have to be profitable, the company said. And city officials stressed that the business has to be successful.

Starbucks opened the first one in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York in 2016 and expects to open the Southern Dallas location in spring 2018. Others have opened in the Englewood neighborhood on the south side of Chicago and in East Baltimore.

CEOS Sharing Entrepreneurial Journeys With South Dallas High School Students

Nearly 50 male high school students from across southern Dallas are gathering this week at the University of North Texas at Dallas for five days of intensive training and mentoring designed to help mold them into tomorrow’s business leaders.

Known as ELEVATE, the leadership academy, which began Monday, is being organized by RISE Clothing entrepreneurs Terrence and Tim Maiden, twin 38-year-old brothers who plan to share some of the hard-won lessons they learned in building a successful apparel business.

More than 20 other executives, including CEOs, will also be on hand to lend their expertise. The program, a mix of panels, lectures, and workshops, will feature a broad array of topics on everything from basic entrepreneurship to networking and business etiquette.

Oak Cliff Natives Aim to Alleviate Poverty Through Clothing Brand

For Tim and Terrence Maiden, Dallas’ poverty problem really hits home. The identical twin brothers grew up in Dallas County, a place where 29 percent of residents under age 18 are in poverty, according to county-level poverty estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau in December. It wasn’t until they left Oak Cliff to attend Texas Christian University on football scholarships, that they realized the extent of the area’s poverty.

“Our environment exposed us to some of the challenges derived from poverty,” Tim said. “We didn’t know it ’till we were able to escape that environment. We’d never walked on a college campus ’till we were being recruited.” Today, Terrence serves as managing partner for The Nediam Co., a capital venture company the twins formed in 2001, and as executive vice president for Corinth Properties. Tim is a senior vice president at Frost Bank.

Former TCU football standouts Terrence and Tim Maiden help inner-city kids see a new vision for their futures.

Growing up, identical twins Terrence and Tim Maiden didn’t know what they wanted out of life—except for a ticket out of the inner city. For both boys, football was the answer. After graduating from Carter High School in Oak Cliff in the late 1990s, Terrence and Tim were each given full scholarships to Texas Christian University. That led to connections with influential company executives who support TCU—and to successful business careers of their own.

Terrence and Tim Maiden helped put TCU football on the map. Now they're trying to do the same for the Duncanville Fieldhouse. The twin brothers have partnered with the fieldhouse to open RISE Clothing, a brand of athletic gear that marks the building's first stab at bringing in retail dollars. "This is just the tip of the iceberg," fieldhouse General Manager Craig Brasfield said. "There will be a lot more [retail] on the way."

Excelling scholastically and athletically, both twins earned football scholarships to TCU. Upon graduation, both were scouted by the NFL, and yet again, the Maiden Twins took the path less taken. Instead, they chose to enter the work force; Tim in banking and Terrence in real estate. Both climbed their respective ladders quickly, while all along maintaining a burning desire to give back to the south Dallas community that they say shaped them.

Just five years after graduation, the twins started the Two-Wins foundation with the goal of “building communities and changing lives”. For 10 years, they’ve been doing just that. By taking groups of students out of south Dallas, literally, to places like hospitals, hotels, college campuses and so on, they say that these students are able to get a glimpse of what is truly out there and the endless possibilities.

Identical twins Terrance Maiden ’00 and Tim Maiden ’00 grew up in south Dallas on their way to standout careers on an ultra-talented TCU football squad that included current NFL stars LaDainian Tomlinson and Aaron Schobel.

The Maiden brothers are now helping boys and girls from their old neighborhood become the next generation of stars — and maybe future Frogs. A group of 25 at-risk youth from Dallas toured the TCU campus and attended the Air Force-TCU football game Nov. 22 as part of the Tomorrow’s Leaders program sponsored by Tim and Terrence’s Two-Wins.org.

Two Wins FoundationThe Dallas-based Maiden twins founded the Two Wins Foundation back in 2005 with the mission to ‘make a difference’ by addressing socio-economic issues and investing in local organizations, programs, and initiatives. Next spring, the organization plans to launch the Rising Sons Initiative, a program through Cedar Valley College and Dallas County Community College District that will equip young men with the tools to become industry leaders.

Toy giveaway makes Port Arthur children’s day and Christmas

Some local volunteers, some volunteers from Dallas, some volunteers from Georgia Tech University, some Port Arthur YMCA staff and two Santas made the “Jingle All The Way” toy giveaway on Saturday at the Y in Port Arthur a success.

“For years we worked with the Y in Dallas. We heard about Hurricane Harvey and we asked if there was a Y in south Texas that could benefit from a toy giveaway.” Bud Oliver, director of the YMCA in Port Arthur, was contacted and he was receptive to the idea and extremely grateful to extend the opportunity, Terrence said

TCU twins impact community with foundation

TCU alumni and former football players Terrence and Timothy Maiden never wanted to be held down by the circumstances of their South Dallas upbringing. The Maiden twins created the Two-Wins foundation, a Dallas-based non-profit organization designed to help underserved and disenfranchised children. “We started the foundation with the focus of giving back to the community by exposing kids to education and careers,” Terrence Maiden said. Maiden says that the focus of Two-Wins is building community and changing lives.

Since its founding in 2005, the organization has grown from 600 participating students to more than 5,000 per year. The organization has created programs specific to inspiring students toward higher education, according to Two-Wins’ website.

Dallas twins’ Two-Wins Foundation reaches inner-city children

Although life is good now for identical twins Timothy and Terrence Maiden, growing up as children in inner city Dallas was not easy. The easiest thing to do, perhaps, would be to succomb to the challenges and disenfranchisement they saw around their Oak Cliff home.

But the boys instead felt inspired to get an education, strive for success in the business world and now become role models and inspiration for other children growing up in tough circumstances.

Looking back now, the brothers say they were fortunate to have been raised with both their mother and father. As the youngest of four boys, Terrence Maiden said his family provided stability.

Handsome. Successful. Rugged. Ready. The two winners, Tim, older by 32 minutes, and his identical twin, Terrance, have tackled life as partners, together right from the start. They seem to be able to take anything life throws their way and come out successful. They want to make sure every child who comes across their path, has that same opportunity for success, so they started Two-Wins Foundation five years ago.

Terrance and Tim Maiden grew up in inner-city Dallas, attended Carter High School, where they both played football — Terrance as line backer and Tim as receiver. Following graduation in 1996, both young men attended Texas Christian University (TCU) as bona fide Horned Frogs on full football scholarships. “We were expected to succeed in our studies, as well as in sports,” Tim remarked. “Athletics was part of our whole life, but it was assumed we would go to college. Our older brother played football at the University of Notre Dame.” Clearly, they had learned even though football was everything, it really wasn’t everything.

Duncanville Fieldhouse Partners With RISE Clothing

The City of Duncanville recently announced a partnership between Duncanville Fieldhouse and RISE Clothing. Expanding their leisure wear brand with a storefront location in the Fieldhouse, RISE Clothing will also offer their customers the ability to order online through the Fieldhouse’s website.

Duncanville Fieldhouse has designated an area in their general store as a RISE Merchandise Store area. RISE is responsible for the cost of stocking merchandise, displays and equipment. In addition, RISE is paying the Fieldhouse a sponsorship, a monthly rental fee and a percentage of all sales net tax.

Oak Cliff ‘Athleisure-wear’ Startup Expects 2017 Growth

Eight months after launching an athleisure-wear company that they bought in Cincinnati and brought to Dallas, identical twins Terrence and Tim Maiden envision a year of robust growth for a brand that offers not only clothes, but inspiration.Appropriately named RISE, the Oak Cliff-based venture couples the sales of its online apparel with a commitment to foster “positive change,” particularly in impoverished communities.

A percentage of its revenues goes into community programs to help eradicate poverty and improve social conditions. One of its websites — inspiredtorise.com — offers motivational messages from “brand ambassadors” such as former NFL star LaDainian Tomlinson, a six-time All-Pro during his 11-year career with the San Diego Chargers, and Coqueace “KoCo” Powell, a third-generation cancer survivor who has traveled the country to offer hope to other cancer victims.
